
The Sale Fly Fishing Club was formed on 23rd November, 1988 with its first meeting at the AMP Society Bldg, Raymond St. Sale.
The meeting consisted of around 44 potential members and the following office bearers were voted in:
President: Greg Hall
Vice President: Ron Bassler
Secretary: Geoff Innes
Treasurer: John Hall
The remaining Committee members were to be decided at a later date.
A Joining fee of $20 and $20 membership was decided upon.
The following is a short account of the year by year operation of the Club:
1989
Meeting shifted to RSL Hall, Macalister St. Sale.
Consideration given to building a lodge on the Crooked River and even a plan of the proposed premises was drawn up.
Then it was decide to tender for an old Mill home at Heyfield and use the materials to construct the lodge, and that was the last thing ever recorded about the proposed Lodge.
1990
Venue shifted to Continuing Education Centre, Raymond St. Sale and then to the Sportsmans Club, Cnr Cunningham and Palmerston Sts. Sale.
Fly Fishing competition with Bairnsdale Club which Sale managed to win even though it was washed out.
1991
Membership was now 32 members.
Video Library set up.
Club Trips commenced, with one in April to Lake Tarago and then in May to Jindabyne and October to Eucumbene.
1992
Dam X stocked.
Weighmaster and Club Trophies commenced.
1993
Club membership expands to 48.
Trout in Dam X ready and fish to 3lb available to catch.
Eucumbene Trip in March.
Glenmaggie and Macalister stocked with 10,000 Browns and 10,000 Rainbows after representation by Club, this was the first stocking since 1984.
Black Lake discovered, with a fish of 7-3/4/lb taken and another of 8-1/4lb at a later date.
1994
Joining fee $20, with Membership increasing to $30.
Club Trip to Jindabyne in March.
Fishing gear auction held which raised $400 for the Club.
Fly Tying commenced on another night, up until then it was held after the meeting.
Events Calendar included on back of Newsletter.
A lot of policy making regarding conditions for fishing Dam X with Catch and release introduced.
Club Trip to Dargo River
1995
Club Membership 50.
January meeting held at Glenmaggie Weir Wall with a BBQ.
BBQ built by Club on the bank of Rainbow Creek.
Country membership of $10 per annum introduced for those that had shifted away.
Club trip to Eucumbene/Jindabyne in April.
Dam Y stocked with fingerlings, but when trialled only Redfin caught, it was later netted and no trout remained.
Avon River stocked by Club with 1000 trout.
Club helped with tree planting on Macalister River.
Club Photo Album introduced for recording Club events and fishing trips.
Weigh-in Slips introduced.
DNRE Notice Board/Shelters constructed by Club at Glenmaggie.
Attendance Register introduced.
1996
Club Membership 41.
Casting Tournament held at Lake Gutheridge, won by Ron Bassler.
Team Off day held at 20 Acre Creek, Wellington and Rainbow Creek, where inexperienced members teamed up with experienced members to learn new tricks of the trade.
Licola trip held in April.
Trout released in Avon.
1997
Algae bloom on Dam X.
Winter Christmas party held at Wallaby Rise
Ron Jarvis passed away.
Closed Trout season re-introduced.
Dam X restocked.
Club Auction held of fishing gear and fly tying materials.
Club assists with stocking of Lake Glenmaggie, Macalister River and Rainbow Creek.
Casting Clinics held in conjuction with Wellington Shire.
Club enters Victorian Fly Fishing Championships. Dr Robin Hyde wins female section and ninth overall, Juniors did well but Senior men failed to grass a fish.
Ron Jarvis Memorial Trophy commenced.
Licola Trip in September.
Sale Angler further develops stocks of fly fishing gear.
1998
January meeting held at a BBQ at Cowwar Weir.
Show us your fly competition commenced.
Dam X in bad condition due to drought and not restocked.
Project Funding Submission to Vic Health for a $4600 grant made and rejected.
Fly tying and exhibition of Flys tied by members held at the Sale Art Gallery.
Fly Tying Workshop with Mick Hall and John Rumpf.
1999
Ashley Artis guest speaker at Feb. Meeting.
Owner of Dam X advised he was selling the property.
Fly Tying demonstration held in Sale Mall.
Ian Brideson gets a second in the intermediate section of the Australian Fly Tying Championships.
Family picnic at Cowwar Weir.
$1,000 raised in a major Club Raffle.
Club helps out with children’s fishing day on Lake Gutheridge.
2000
Beginners day held on the Macalister River for new members.
Pat Washington Chairman of VRFish guest speaker at June meeting.
Scott Mitchell of Alpine Angler guest speaker at special dinner and meeting. Scott discussed salt water fly fishing basics.
The dreaded Pizza Fairy visited Ray Clissold at the Licola Trip.
2001
Three meeting rule for membership dropped.
Eucumbene trip was at Bolaro Station
Club helps with tree planting along the Dargo River.
Fly tying demonstration held at the Sale Angler over the Rock and Roll Festival weekend.
Family night held at Wallaby Rise.
2002
Club Membership increases to $50.
Club sponsorship sought because of high Public Liability Insurance.
Members invited to Bairnsdale Fly Fishing Club Lodge for a weekend in May.
Rick Sunderland included in Victorian Fly Fishing Team to fish Australian Championships in Tasmania.
Club members assist in grape picking at Glenmaggie Winery.
Club Tee Shirts arranged.
Ray Warner made a life member for his services and commitment as Treasurer of the Club over a thirteen year period.
2003
Article in Gippsland Times detailing the operation of the Club.
Club provides a Fly Tying and Casting demonstration at Sale Rocks On Festival.
Club members assist in grape picking at Glenmaggie Winery.
Club participates in a creel survey of the Macalister River.
Peter Murray nominated as Gippsland representative on VRFish committee.
Club provides a Fly Tying demonstration at the Wellington Shire Home and Leisure Show.
2004
Club Membership remains at $50 per annum with Junior and Country Members at $10, but $20 joining fee removed.
Rob Flower is guest speaker at the February meeting. Rob brought for sale hundreds of Flys he had tied as well and copies of his book on Australian Trout Food.
Andrew Martin is guest speaker at the March meeting, he discussed Salt Water Fly Fishing on the Cape York Peninsula.
Gavin Scully entertains members with a night of slides and photos of fishing the local area over the past 30years.
Steve Mills from E.J. Todd is guest speaker at June meeting. Steve displayed the latest Fly Tying materials and also sold some run out materials he had on hand.
Club Newsletter E-mailed to those members with computers.
2005
Club Website created by Ray and Tim Clissold.
Macalister River Trophy Commenced and subsequently sponsored by the Sale Angler.
Club sponsorship dropped.
Club gives permission for our badges to be used on costumes for the film “Jindabyne”.
Ray Warner donates Fly Fishing books to Club.
Jack Groenewald presents a demonstration of different coloured materials and what effect they have on fish.
Nicole Hall of the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority is guest speaker at the September meeting.
2006
Club meetings shifted from third Wednesday to third Monday of each month.
Age of Junior Membership lifted from 18 to 21 years.
Club DVD Library list included on Website.
Club family day at Lake Glenmaggie poorly attended.
Club T-shirts and hats arranged.
2007
Sale Angler a reliable supplier of Fly Fishing and Fly Tying equipment/materials to the Club closes down. Sale Angler was also the sponsor of our Macalister River Trophy and donated Gift Vouchers for our monthly Fly Tying competition.
Ron Bassler, past President, Secretary and Committee member of the Club passes away.
“Show Us Your Fly” Trophy introduced and later renamed the Ron Bassler Memorial Trophy for the best Fly Tier of the year. The Trophy comprises of Flys tied by Ron presented in a framed box.
Club trip to Blue Rock Dam arranged.
2008
Club membership down to 28.
Twentieth Anniversary of the Club
Club Honour Board to be set-up on Website to acknowledge those members who had served as President, Secretary and Treasurer over the past twenty years.
Forum Section created on Club Website to allow members to post news items.
Twentieth Anniversary Club Shirts to be arranged.
Fishing Regulation under review and Club members requested to complete a feedback form and send it to DPI.
